Serving Others Scholarship
Honoring the people who strengthen our communities
Each year, the Independent Insurance Agents of South Dakota (IIASD) awards $20,000 in scholarships to students who recognize the positive impact that service has in their hometowns. Our members are deeply rooted in communities across South Dakota, and this scholarship reflects that same commitment to helping others.
This program is designed to uplift the stories of individuals who make a meaningful difference — and the students who notice.

Who Can Apply
This scholarship is open to:
- Any South Dakota student (high school senior, current college student, or nontraditional student)
- Who will be attending a South Dakota college, university, or technical school this fall
- And who submits their essay through a participating IIASD member office
How It Works
We’re not evaluating GPAs or résumés.
We’re looking for students who recognize and value the people around them who make South Dakota communities stronger.
To apply, students must:
1. Choose someone in their community who serves others.
This may be:
- A dedicated volunteer
- A neighbor who always steps up
- A teacher or mentor
- A local organizer
- A business owner who gives back
- Anyone whose actions help build a stronger, more caring community
2. Write an essay sharing that person’s story.
Your essay should explain:
- Who they are
- How they serve
- Why their actions matter
- How their example has shaped or inspired you
We’re looking for authentic stories about real people — the ones who don’t seek recognition, but make a difference all the same.
3. Submit your essay to a participating IIASD member office.
Our scholarship is rooted in community.
That’s why applications are delivered in person to the offices of local independent insurance agents who serve these same hometowns.
Why We Created This Scholarship
South Dakota thrives because so many people choose to give their time, energy, and heart to others.
The Serving Others Scholarship honors these individuals by inviting students to share their stories — and by supporting the next generation of community-minded learners.
Important Dates
All applications must be dropped off at an IIASD member office by February 28th. No exceptions!
