Legislative Reception 2026

South Dakota’s Legislature and Division of Insurance are the main entities overseeing our industry.  One of our primary duties as your association is to ensure we engage public policymakers on the issues impacting you as small businesses and as insurance advisors in your community.  Legislators attend these receptions throughout the session.  We are the main insurance advocacy group in South Dakota, so legislators look to us for public policy in insurance.  They like to hear from IIASD staff, but they want to hear from you, their constituents.  This is a no-cost to you, but high upside event to project our strength as an association.

If you need a refresher on the workings of the legislature, here’s some great information.

What to Expect

Pre-Game Update | February 10th @ 4pm, St. Charles Lounge, Pierre

We will be hosting a quick Lobbyist/Legislator update at 4pm before the reception. We’ll take a look at who’s on our target committees, what’s happened so far, and what we are watching during session. This will be very helpful as you visit with the legislators.

The Reception | February 10th @ 5pm, St. Charles Lounge, Pierre

If it’s your first time attending the Legislative Reception, you’re going to love it!

The St. Charles Lounge in Pierre. It’s right down the street from the Capitol so it’s a great location for legislators to swing by when they’re done for the day.

This is the perfect time to visit with lawmakers and make sure your voice as an independent agent is heard.

The Division of Insurance | february 11th, TBD, DOI Office

Each year, the Division of Insurance is kind enough to host us at their office for a rundown of who they are, what they do, and what may be on the horizon for insurance regulation.

We typically visit with them the morning after the reception.

The decisions made at the DOI have a huge effect on the industry and it’s great for us to get some facetime with them.

The Statehouse | February 11th, TBD, State Capitol

Time to see how the sausage is made!

After visiting with the Division of Insurance, we can head to the Capitol. Most insurance legislation comes through the Commerce & Energy committee, which meets daily at 10am. These committee meetings are open to the public, and space permitting, we might catch consideration of an insurance bill.
